Mavrovo National Park

About the Park

Mavrovo - a national park in western Macedonia covering an area of 73,088 hectares, is the largest among the three national parks in Macedonia. Designated as a national park in 1949, it encompasses the mountains of Korab, Deshat, the southwestern slopes of Shar Mountain, a significant part of Bistra, and the northern parts of Krchin. The central part of the national park includes the valley and the basin of the Radika River. Also within the national park is the artificial Mavrovo Lake.

Within the park's boundaries, numerous fascinating morphological formations can be found: river valleys, gorges, waterfalls, karst fields, basins, sinkholes, caves, cirques, glacial lakes, various forms of denudation, and more. The predominant vegetation in the park is the community of beech forests. Within the boundaries of the Mavrovo National Park are over 52 mountain peaks with elevations exceeding 2000 meters, among which the most notable are Medenica Peak in the Bistra mountain, Velivar, Sandaktash, and others. Of particular significance to the Mavrovo National Park is Golem Korab Peak (2764 meters above sea level), which is also the highest peak in the Republic of North Macedonia and thus the highest point of the park. The lowest point in the Mavrovo National Park is at 600 meters above sea level, located at the confluence of the Mala River into the Radika River.

Flora

The total number of known species of vascular flora within the territory of the Mavrovo National Park is rounded to 1,435 species, of which a remarkable 404 species and subspecies are categorized as medicinal plants. From a biogeographical perspective, the territory of the Mavrovo National Park, within the borders of the Republic of North Macedonia, represents a native area where numerous oreo-tundral (Arctic-mountain) and northern (boreal) floristic elements thrive.

In addition to the high diversity of species, another striking characteristic of the flora of the Mavrovo National Park is the relatively high degree of endemism (13 species), as well as the presence of rare plant species (29 species), which are registered solely within the territory of the Mavrovo National Park throughout the Republic of North Macedonia.

The analysis and valorization of biodiversity components have been conducted based on numerous representative taxonomic groups, including Algae (78), Fungi (661), Lichens (151), and Plants (1,473).

Fauna

The analysis and valorization of biodiversity components have been conducted based on numerous representative taxonomic groups, including: Fish (8), Amphibians (11), Reptiles (24), Birds (129), and Mammals (50).

Within the territory of the Mavrovo National Park, the presence of a total of 15 endemic taxa (species and subspecies) has been established, including: plants (13), invertebrate fauna (86), fish (3), amphibians (3), reptiles (5), and mammals (5). Out of the total number (115) of endemic species and subspecies, 58 are local/national endemics, while the remaining 57 are Balkan endemics.

Hydrography

The entire territory of the Protected Area, Mavrovo National Park, is essentially included in the watershed of the Radika River, with an average annual flow at the Boskov Most gauge station of 19.63 m3/s. The Radika River does not have a distinct source; rather, it is formed by numerous small streams that originate along the slopes and the bottom of the Gorni Def-Velin Beg cirque. The source of the Radika River is a small watercourse that forms northwest of the peak Golema Vraca. Alongside the rivers, the park's territory features other hydrological formations, including notable aquatic habitats such as springs, glacial lakes, temporary ponds, and the Mavrovo Reservoir. Within the park, one of the most complex hydroelectric systems, the Mavrovo Hydroelectric Power Plant, operates. Comprising the three power plants of Vrutok, Raven, and Vrben, with a total reservoir capacity of 277 million cubic meters, it stands as one of the largest and most intricate systems in the Macedonian power grid.
